Old places of Kingdom of Wu 吳國

The beautiful spring time in Wuxi and Suzhou(蘇州,無錫), where the ancient Kingdom of Wu was located. This was part of our Jiangnan (江南 South of Yangtze River) tour. In old time, Jiangnan was destination of many people because of its weather and scenery. They used to say: there is heaven above; below there is Su Hang (Su=Suzhou, capitol of Wu nation, Hang=Hangzhou, capitol of Yue nation).

Kingdom of Wu – 12th century BC to 473 BC:

The Wu nation (吳國:Wú Guó) was one of the nations during the Western Zhou Dynasty. It was located near the mouth of Yangtze River. Considered a semi-barbarian place by ancient Chinese historians, its capital was at modern day Suzhou.

Wu Nation was later conquered by an upstart nation to its south, the Yue Nation (越國), in 473 BC. After the demise of Wu, people fled and some of them used the kongdom's name as surname.

Ancestral halls 白石吳氏宗祠 2010

Our first ancestral settlement was at Yulongtan (Fish Dragon Beach 魚龍灘) along the Huanghua River (黃華江) in the northern part of Baishi (White Stone Town 白石鎮). This is a very nice flat area, about 30 min. motorcycle drive from my cousin's hilly Dawei Village (大圍村) in the eastern part of Baishi. The first ancestral hall was built at Poping Village (坡坪村) on the east side of the river with the clan's name Yanling Prefecture (堂號:延陵郡).

The 2nd generation ancestral hall was built on the west side of the river at Yulongtan (魚龍灘) with his tomb on the hill at the back.
